Amara - The Beginning
In June, 1883 the famous and revered Basque revolutionary Don Guy Diego de Berg arrived on the land that is now Amara Resort & Spa after traveling from his beloved homeland in the Basque region of Spain and France. Don Guy instantly knew the creek and the red rocks created a magical and enchanted land. He needed a place of respite because he was weary from leading the first of the Basque revolutions against Spain and France.
In love with this land, Don Guy called it Amara, a combination of the Basque words for love and land. Don Guy sent for his mother, Dona Maria de Berg. For 8 years, Don Guy and Dona Maria lived a quiet and pious life in harmony with and reverence of this land. They were the first to discover the spiritual power of the vortex and the curative powers of the creek and red rocks.
Yearning to see their Basque home and friends, Don Guy and Dona Maria traveled to New York in 1891 and sailed for Spain where they were arrested by Spanish Authorities and quickly met untimely deaths. To this day, they are revered as revolutionary martyrs.
Amara Resort & Spa is dedicated in loving memory to Don Guy Diego de Berg and Dona Maria de Berg. Our goal is to create a tranquil and lovely resort that fulfills their love of this magical and spiritual land.
